Then he left his job as a peon and joined a local railway station as a telegraph operator. In this way, Carnegie gradually gained the position of big sir of tele department.

Starting out with a meager salary in weaving, Carnegie wanted to change his fortunes by taking a job as a peon. After working there for a few years, his experience pushed him further. He did the job of sending the telegraph very well. His skill in operating the telegraph machine attracted everyone's attention. He continued to improve rapidly in the tele division. The boss under whom he worked one day reached his level by his own merit.


After becoming the head of the tele division, he started the railway and mining oil business besides his job. Railways were the most popular means of communication then. A lot of money came into his hands in the railway business. He did not waste this money. He further increased his income by investing the profit in the oil business. Within a very short time this business started making a lot of money. Profits meant Carnegie continued to invest in new businesses.


He continued to succeed in all businesses one after the other. In this way, Carnegie bought seven big iron factories one by one and started running them under his own supervision. Carnegie had not yet reached the quota of 35, at which time Carnegie became known as the world's most famous iron merchant.
